Jose Mourinho has rejected the offer to replace Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal in 2017 instead reiterating his desire to the club to return to coaching this summer.

According to a report by The Sun, the former Chelsea coach believes he is closer than ever to being appointed Man Utd boss.

The Sun reports: “United chief Ed Woodward hoped Mourinho might accept the proposal and opt for a lucrative 12-month spell in the Chinese Super League ahead of a move to Manchester.

The approach to Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes came straight from the Old Trafford high command led by Woodward in the past fortnight.”

“The plan suggested Woodward is still reluctant to sanction cutting short Van Gaal’s three-year contract 12 months early because it would be further evidence of his error in appointing the Dutchman in the first place.

Mourinho has however told United he wants a swift return to club management and despite his close relationship with one time mentor Van Gaal, the Portuguese does not want to wait any longer than the next few weeks before being announced Man Utd manager.

United’s top-four hopes will be extinguished this weekend if they fail to win at Norwich and Manchester City beat Arsenal.

Van Gaal’s predecessor David Moyes was sacked in 2014 as soon as his team could no longer make the Champions League places.

Van Gaal has however steering Man Utd to the FA Cup final this season where they will face fellow Premier League team Crystal Palace.
